Where to stay in Guatapé: the three areas, hotel types and how to choose

Guatapé is small, but where you sleep changes the whole trip. You can wake up among painted zócalos and cafés, at the foot of El Peñol Rock, or on the water with the reservoir as your only neighbour. The three areas to stay in Guatapé

1. The town centre

Sleeping in town means restaurants, shops, the malecón and the boats on foot. It is the most practical choice if you arrive by bus and do not want to depend on transport, and the liveliest at night.

• Accommodation: small hotels, hostels, apartments and colonial houses turned boutique hotels.
• Price: from COP 80,000 in a hostel to COP 400,000 in a boutique hotel, about 20 to 100 US dollars.
• Best for: budget travellers, backpackers, anyone with a single day who wants to walk everywhere.
• Keep in mind: weekends bring music until late and streets full of tours.

2. The El Peñol Rock area

Between the town and the rock, along the road and on the hills, there are hotels with a view of the monolith and fincas with pools.

• Accommodation: roadside hotels, tourist fincas, cabins and a few glampings.
• Price: COP 200,000 to 600,000, about 50 to 150 US dollars.
• Best for: families with a car and groups who want a pool and space.
• Keep in mind: you move by car or moto-taxi for everything, and the view is usually of the rock, not the water.

3. The reservoir shore

This is the area that made Guatapé famous in photos. Villas, glampings and hotels with their own dock, reached by car along rural roads or directly by boat.

• Accommodation: private villas, luxury glamping, boutique hotels with a dock.
• Price: from about 150 US dollars, usually quoted in dollars with breakfast included.
• Best for: couples, anniversaries, wellness retreats, celebrations and anyone here to rest more than to sightsee.
• Keep in mind: the disconnection is real. You dine at the hotel or arrange a boat to town.
