Medellín to Guatapé: how to get there by bus, car or tour, distance, time and cost

Guatapé sits 79 kilometres east of Medellín in the Antioquia highlands. In normal conditions the trip takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, depending on city traffic and the day of the week. It is Medellín's favourite weekend escape, so Friday afternoons out and Sunday afternoons back are the slow spots.

Here are the three ways to get there, with real times and prices, and how to continue to Atma Villas, which sits on the reservoir and is reached by boat.

By bus from Terminal del Norte

The cheapest option, and a good one if you travel light.

• Where: Medellín's Terminal del Norte, next to the Caribe metro station.
• Companies: Sotrasanvicente and Sotrapeñol, ticket windows 9 to 14 roughly.
• Frequency: every 30 minutes from 5 am to 7 pm, with extra buses on weekends.
• Fare: about COP 20,000 to 25,000 each way, around 5 to 6 US dollars. Prices rise a little on holidays.
• Duration: about 2 hours. The bus stops in Marinilla and El Peñol on the way.

Ask to be dropped at La Piedra if you want to climb the rock straight away, or stay on to Guatapé's main square. On weekends and holidays buy your return ticket as soon as you arrive, because the last afternoon buses sell out.

By car on the Medellín–Bogotá highway

The classic route leaves on the Medellín–Bogotá highway to Marinilla, takes the turnoff to El Peñol and continues to Guatapé. About 80 kilometres of well-kept paved road, with curves in the last stretch.

• Time: 1 h 45 in light traffic, up to 2 h 30 on Friday afternoons.
• Tolls: one toll on the Medellín–Bogotá highway near Guarne. The Marinilla–El Peñol–Guatapé road has none.
• Alternative: the Oriente Tunnel towards Rionegro, then Marinilla. Faster at peak times, but the tunnel has its own, more expensive, toll.
• Fuel: an average car uses under a quarter tank each way.

Guatapé has private car parks around the main square and the malecón. If you are staying at Atma, you leave the car at Marina Navegar on the El Peñol–Guatapé road and continue by boat.

By day tour

Dozens of agencies in El Poblado and Laureles sell a Guatapé day trip from Medellín. They usually include return transport, breakfast, the climb up El Peñol Rock, a boat ride and free time in town, for COP 120,000 to 200,000, roughly 30 to 50 US dollars.

It is convenient with a single day. The downside is timing: you reach the rock at the same time as every other tour and leave Guatapé mid afternoon, exactly when the town empties and the reservoir is at its best. Stay one night if you can.

Getting to Atma Villas from Guatapé

Atma is in the El Uvital area on the shore of the reservoir, reached by our luxury boat from Marina Navegar, on the El Peñol–Guatapé road a few minutes before the town.

• Boats from the marina to the hotel: 12:30 pm, 4:15 pm and 5:15 pm.
• Boats from the hotel to the marina: 2:30 pm and 5:00 pm.
• Arriving by bus, ask to be dropped at Marina Navegar. Arriving by car, the marina has parking.
• Outside these hours, message us on WhatsApp and we will arrange your transfer.

The boat ride is part of the experience. You cross the reservoir between islands and peninsulas to the private dock, and it is your first view of the villas from the water.

Travel tips

• Leave before 7 am on Saturdays. After that the highway fills with cars heading east.
• The climate changes: Guatapé is at almost 2,000 metres. Pack a light jacket for the evening and sunscreen for the day.
• Cash: the town has ATMs, but the rock, the boats and some restaurants prefer cash.
• Sunday return: leave before noon or after 6 pm to avoid the jam entering Medellín.

What to do once you arrive
